Polarised, tinted, or both
Polarised lenses cut glare reflected off flat surfaces — road, water, car bonnets, wet footpaths. The difference is most obvious driving into low sun and on the water, where polarisation lets you see past the surface rather than at it. If you fish or boat, this is the one that matters.
Tinted lenses reduce overall brightness. Different tints suit different uses: grey keeps colours neutral, brown lifts contrast, and lighter tints work for overcast conditions and dusk.
Photochromic lenses darken in sunlight and clear indoors, which suits people who would rather carry one pair than two. They are a compromise rather than a replacement for proper sunglasses — most darken less behind a windscreen.

If you wear multifocals or progressives
Prescription sunglasses are available in the same lens designs as your everyday glasses — single vision, progressives, multifocals. You do not have to choose between seeing clearly at distance and reading a menu outdoors.
Sunglasses for children
Children’s eyes let through more UV than adults’ do, and Australian children spend a great deal of time outside. Prescription and non-prescription sunglasses are worth the same attention for them as for you.
