Paul Fell has fitted contact lenses for more than forty years, and it remains one of his particular clinical interests.
That matters more than it sounds. A contact lens that is nearly right is a contact lens you stop wearing by three in the afternoon — and most people who believe contacts “don’t suit them” were simply fitted with the wrong ones.
A fitting is not the same as a prescription
Your glasses prescription is a starting point, not an answer. A contact lens sits directly on the eye, so fitting one properly means measuring the shape of your cornea, assessing your tear film, and checking how a given lens actually behaves on your eye over time.
Then we let you wear them and see how they feel after a real day rather than after five minutes in the chair.
What a fitting costs
A contact lens fitting is $100, and that includes your follow-up appointments.
It is charged separately from your eye test, because it is a separate piece of work — measuring, trialling, teaching you to handle the lenses, and reviewing how they have actually performed once you have lived in them.
Follow-ups being included is the important part. Getting a lens right is often a second or third conversation rather than a first one, and you should not be weighing up whether a small problem is worth paying to mention.
What we fit
Daily disposables — a fresh pair each morning, nothing to clean or store. The simplest option, and the best one for occasional wear, sport, or anyone prone to irritation.
Fortnightly and monthly lenses — better value for daily wearers, with a simple cleaning routine.
Toric lenses for astigmatism — many people are told astigmatism rules out contact lenses. For most, it does not; it means a lens designed to stay correctly oriented on the eye.
Multifocal contact lenses — if you have reached the age where reading glasses appeared, multifocal contacts can often replace them. Fitting them well takes patience and experience, which is where forty years helps.

If you already wear lenses and get on with them, bring the box — we can almost certainly continue them.
Wearing them safely
Contact lenses are medical devices sitting on the surface of your eye. Worn as directed they are very safe; worn carelessly they are the most common cause of avoidable eye infection we see.
That means not sleeping in lenses that are not designed for it, not topping up old solution, not rinsing anything in tap water, and replacing lenses on schedule rather than when they start to bother you.
We will show you how to insert, remove and care for your lenses properly, and we will keep checking the health of your eyes at each visit — which is the part that matters most and the part online lens retailers cannot do.
